If you've been wanting to start a project but can't seem to make it happen, then this episode is for you. We talk about the power of deadlines and cite the work of Season Two's guests Shannon Cason (Episode 2) and David Crabb (Episode 7).

Hey there. I'm Tricia Rose Burt, and welcome to another mini episode of No Time to Be Timid.

So this week I was on Storyteller to Storyteller. It's a show that streams live on YouTube on Sunday nights at 8 p.m. and it's hosted by my dear pal Shannon Cason. You may remember Shannon from Season Two, Episode Two of this podcast, and if you didn't hear that interview, go listen to it right after this, because he's just such an amazing artist. He's got so much inspiration and wisdom and he's just so gosh darn funny.

Shannon asked me questions about my podcast and it got me thinking about how it all started. I'd been kicking around the idea since I met Shannon in 2016. He had his podcast, Homemade Stories, which is wonderful -- you should go listen to that too -- and I was intrigued. So for about six years I toyed with the idea of a podcast, but I never made it happen. Then The Moth called me in February of 2022 and said they wanted to air one of my stories that June, and I said, great. And then I remembered at the end of each Moth story, they add a little bio about the storyteller, and I said, hey, would you mind saying in my bio that I'm the host of the popular new podcast No Time to Be Timid? And they said, sure. The show didn't exist. I knew nothing about producing a podcast. I didn't even own a microphone, but there was no way I was going to miss that marketing opportunity, because in four months, an audience of millions was going to hear that I was the host of the popular new podcast No Time to Be Timid, so there had best be a podcast for them to listen to.

And I also knew that the best way for me to get this dream realized was to create a situation, a non-negotiable deadline, where I had to produce that podcast. Deadline creation is a tool that works for me and for many creators. David Crabb said the same thing in Season two, Episode Seven. He's got to make containers for his work. If he books a venue, he's going to have a solo show to perform on that date. So if you're starting this year wanting to create something but afraid to jump in, being kind of wishy washy about the whole thing, give yourself a deadline. Book the venue, commit to the art show, agree to the podcast. You don't want to regret never stepping into your creativity and we want to see your work. So go do it! And remember, this is no time to be timid.
